Bill Mayer - New Gouache Drawings

New Gouache Drawings

A new series of paintings I have been experimenting with. They're a blend of traditional and digital that I am trying; to blend the media together to fool the eye into looking like traditional paintings. The Ideas come fairly organically, sometimes they're thought out in my head before I start, Sometimes they change as I am working on them.
Bill Mayer - Staying Sharp

Staying Sharp

Okay a great way to stay sharp, take an object from your studio and do ten sketches :10 min.... (insert some lame joke about unlocking the creative psyche) I like staying sharp, but Lee took all the sharp objects out of the studio... So any old object works..... If you want to see more right brain thinking here they are....This is a little exercise I started when I was in art school...Doesn't have to be brilliant, just a great way of staying fresh and keeping the ideas flowing. Honestly, each little set of drawings only took :10 but then another 20 minutes or so to scan them and figure out how to post them....but you get the idea.

MY SKETCH BOOK MAY OFFER SOME INSIGHT INTO THE WORK BEYOND COMMISSIONED WORK. I HAVE THREE RULES WITH MY SKETCH BOOK. NO ERASING OR TEARING OUT PAGES AND NO MORE SEX DRAWINGS. THE LAST RULE I ALWAYS END UP BREAKING....
Bill Mayer - Letters to Lee

Letters to Lee

Letters to Lee is a collection of letters I have sent my wife, Lee, over the years, which under the encouragement of my insane workaholic intern Yu Sojung, and my good friend, Goñi Montes, I compiled into a handmade 82-foot accordion-fold book as a Valentine's Present this year. Bill Mayer - Stamp Drawings

Stamp Drawings

Okay, as promised, fresh off the scanner. Here are some of the four hundred ( yeah I know ) stamp drawings I scanned from sketchbooks. Several friends had been telling me for years to publish these ,so the first step was to scan them all and evaluate. See if there's enough to make a pretty good selection for a book. Let me know what you think. Next step I guess, I would need to start writing some publishers...I am not really sure if there is a rational explanation behind these silly little drawings, I used to paste these stamps in my sketchbooks and draw over the top of them. I loved the contrast of the beautiful craftsmanship and stoic nature of the stamp and the playful, graffiti like gesture of absurdity. It makes me smile. Naturally © Bill Mayer 2010
Bill Mayer - Typoglycemic

Typoglycemic

Work in progress This series of little illustrations I did a few months ago creating an alphabet based on fonts, letting the font push the ideas out. Naturally my rather macabre sense of humor is always present. Trying to think of a name for this dark little alphabet. TYPO-GLYCEMIC, TYPO-PHOBIA , FONTPHOBIA FONTOFOBIA,TYPO-PHOBIC,FONTOPHOBIC TYPOSIS or maybe just ...Savage fonts illustrations Bill Mayer Naturally © Bill Mayer 2010

A retrospective is sometimes an interesting exercise in humility, but not all together uninformative. Here is a selection of some of my favorite illustrations done over the years.I am sure I missed some good ones somewhere editing through the files. Of course your only as good as your last drawing....
Bill Mayer - BEBO PART ONE

BEBO PART ONE

Originally I did these for fun but I decided to use them as sort a running strip through 3x3 directory. Unfortunately I got a call from Charles who said as much as he liked them they had to be single images, and technically they were multiple images on each page. So I opted to run some of my stamp drawings instead
Bill Mayer - General Orders No.9

General Orders No.9

Deer trail becomes Indian trail becomes county road. General Orders No. 9 provides a history of the state of Georgia, but not in any normal textbook fashion. Instead it takes an impressionistic and poetic approach to span the time when Europeans first discovered the land that was then inhabited by Indians to the present day. It's an almost spiritual history shaped by landscape and geography, but as man began to impart his will onto the land, a conflict develops from the scars of war to the development of interstates, which gave rise to the city, which is presented as an abberation, an oppressive machine that works to isolate instead of unifying with a sense of belonging and place. General Orders No. 9 is one last trip down the rabbit hole before it gets paved over. A deep geography. What is above and what is below. What came before and what will come after. Agrarian fantasies, sacrificial rites, and excavations. A story told with maps, dreams, and prayers.Icons for a Lost Civilization. Bill Mayer - For the love of a good line

For the love of a good line

The past few months I have been playing around with a series of line and collage pieces. The origin came loosely from a new business pitch I was working on with Y&R New York. It has been a fun little experiment and I hope you enjoy the results. I just love the solid graphic, big areas of blacks and brilliant white. I can't help thinking there just might be something there.... Naturally, all drawings © Bill Mayer 2011
