For PlanAdviser, one of the mags that SooJin Buzelli designs and art directs. The article is about the difficulties of dividing family heirlooms, and the copy mentioned unique things like cigars, scotch and stuffed animals. In contrast to some of the more visually unwieldy financial terms and concepts in these publications, I sometimes get assigned stuff that lends itself to a literal interpretation. My job here is to take an element from the story and punch it up a little bit. The struggles in the execution are the usual ones for me - when to stop with the line and begin with the color, what to leave in, what to leave out, etc.. it's an ongoing thing.

Here's the first scribble. Here it seems to have most of the spacial elements that wound up in the final. This was tightened up before showing it to SooJin and looked more like the other quick sketches submitted (below).

For Golf Digest, one of several for a feature with the headline: How to Play More Golf. In this case, maybe skipping the gym and getting your exercise on the course. The CD here is Ken DeLago. He'll usually give me a list of possible choices to illustrate, which is real comfortable way to go with these type of things.

From another article, this one about difficult, nerve racking golf shots. In this case: "Trouble on the right". These drawing were quarter page compliments to two beautiful full page paintings about golf anxiety by Christian Northeast which anchored the feature.

From the same series - the deep bunker.

When my friend Ed Sorel saw this, he wrote an e mail saying: 'John, next time you draw something exploding out of the water, go to Google and look at pictures of how something looks when it explodes OUT of the water."

Something for a column I do for Mary Parsons at American Prospect. This one's about fantasy football.

A quick sketch for a column about gift giving in Town and Country. In this case, the appropriate gift for your weekend hosts at their summer house. (The chosen image hasn't run yet so I'll hold off on posting it.)

The leader of France's right wing National Front party, Marine Le Pen. For the "sketch" column in Atlantic Monthly, which is art directed by Elisa Glass.

For a question about "toe licking", for Esquire's sex advice column.

Here's a killed sketch about a women who slept with a guy she met the night before and freaked out the next morning when he used her toiletries. Below: another sketch for that toe licking thing. It's a better drawing than the final, which is often the case.
