Pulling the Plug on Myself

Everyone here seems to have gone back about their business with maybe one eye on the big hand in the sky that could at any moment descend to pluck them from these pages... well, almost everyone has that foreboding... there are a few who have questioned whether they will be staying. I can affirm that those are the very people who know that they are secure. Like much of what goes on around here, the claims of mutual uncertainty at the drama of it all are disingenuous. But those smokescreens are barely noticeable in the mire of lies that is now Drawger.

For some strange reason, I was informed that I would not be unceremoniously removed involuntarily, with no clear explanation, at the stroke of midnight on a Friday. But how can I remain? I'm pulling the plug on myself but I'm not the patient in this metaphor, Drawger is. There was the promise that the then future surgery would yield a healthy place that would resemble the nascent stages of our group. But how can this happen when the surgeon has removed the heart and left the cancer?

There are many more people here that I like than that I dislike, but they remain silent while the core instigators of this change, the cancer cells, have stunk up the back room and moved out front where they write nasty pseudonymous comments on the posts of those they fear are better than themselves. It's all part of that "Evil Rascal" attitude that I have decided I can no longer silently abide. Those of us who have been long-time residents are very cognizant of when the tenor of this place changed, so we know all too well who is the cause and who are part of that tribe.

I'll miss the good times, but those were long ago. Those of you who are friends, please stay in contact.

I will not be starting another blog. Please, Zimm, trash my pages in the customary five days. So long.

Wacom Videos

Last month I flew out to Oregon to meet with the terrific people at Wacom who had set me up with a new Intuos 4 tablet and encouraged me to learn all about its features. I have to admit, I never have been excited by the buttons on any of my previous tablets, but this one really changed that for me.

If you decide to watch these, be aware that it was shot in a studio in a barn (those aren't my books, not my houseplants, computer, posters on the wall, not my wall or window... not my framed portrait of not my "kids"... none of it is mine). If you have the patience to watch all three you'll see my "flip" gradually droop (start with the bottom video and work up for that experience). It's all part of the action..!

A call to do a nice juicy cover image for the Journal's new Travel section really brightened up my last week. This appeared on the newsstand last Saturday. I was happy to see that the paper was full of illustration. Double reason to smile.

You know how it is... I wanted to do something loose, it's tight. Wanted it to be nearly monochromatic, it's colorful. Oh, well. Complete freedom isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Light My Fire

When Road & Track called with the assignment of a big spark plug, my mind went immediately to the Lucian Bernhard ad for Bosch. I knew better than to open my Modern Poster book and look at it, though, because this was to be a contemporary piece and I didn't want to be influenced any more than I already was.

I didn't have any spark plugs handy, since I haven't owned a car since 1978. And I couldn't find reference at the angle that I wanted. So, I made a 3-D plug in AI.

But I couldn't stop there, I had to redraw the shape in AI. Got to get in my vector (read punishment) time.

Then there was the dot patterns and burst stuff. It all came together, but as usual there were things I just couldn't retain from the original sketch. I'm hoping that if I can get myself to loosen up in my drawings, then the spontaneous things that happen in the early stages will still be there in the end.

I've taken up swimming at a local pool. The locker room and the pool area are full of things to draw as people struggle to get their suits and bathing caps on and off. Plus the view that includes the Museum of Natural History is terrific.

	Here is my friend, Edye.
