Beloved Black and White
MAY 12, 2006
I've always preferred working in black and white. I get satisfaction from my color work from time to time, but there's something about the bare bones of black and white that sings to me more often. I love the rasp of a nearly dry inked brush which I use to get a tone on rough watercolor paper. Perhaps I'd have been happier in a previous time when mass print media used only traditional printing techniques like lithography, woodcuts and engraving. But then what would I do without my radio, my Jacques Tati movies, and a hot bath each day?

I'll rue the day when The New York Times Op-Ed page switches to color - it's only a matter of time.
