From the acknowledgements of Victor Bockris's The Life and Death of Andy Warhol/Bantam. This was one of the most awesome things that have ever happened to me. Imagine the company I had there?! It was like this: I met Victor Bockris in the Keith Haring entourage during Keith's installation at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts circa 1983 [done with Little Angel]. I knew Keith for about 5-6 years by then. He studied at one point in Pittsburgh [he’s from Kutztown, PA, where he’s buried] and I met him in after hours drawing class. He also worked as a laborer at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts where he had his very first exhibition. As it were, I was engaged with the PCA for many years since college as a graphic designer for most of their print materials and since I was teaching at Carnegie Mellon University [Andy's alma mater] at the time, I turned Victor on to many of the CMU Warhol connections and scouted locations with him while he took photos and partied! I had a Renault le Car with a sunroof and I have vivid memories of Victor standing up while I drove and screaming out of the roof! I was standing next to the sun in 1983! Imagine: Kwong Chi Tseng, David Wojnarowicz, John Fekner, Keith Haring, LA [Little Angel], and Ann Magnuson all at the same time together-LIVE! -- buying turkey salad sandwiches and smoking NYC weed listening to JUAN’S [Keith’s lover] mixed tapes on a Kenny Scharf original boom box!! I even got blamed for tagging a rich patron's garage after a party because I held the spray cans while THEY danced! At one point during the party, Victor leaned over to me and asked..."are all the good looking women locked in the basement?"!! I found the book at the original Kinokuniya Books in Shinjuku, while living in Tokyo several years later. See the book HERE! So I thought I'd share. If I have already posted this before, consider it dementia. The Dementia of Icarus!
Bockris
This is one of the shoots we did!
The box! Kenny Scharf original!
The gear! Bag not visible in photo.
The hall way [Jenny Holzer!!] leading to the gallery. Believe it or not and kick me in the ass, I owned the entire set of Holzer prints and lost them to time, a flood, divorce and what-not!!
Keith!
LA!
It was black lit so a bit hard to take pictures.
Postcard invite to Keith Haring's first ever art exhibit.
