In the early 1990s I did this illustration for Newsweek. In 1995 I used the theme for a postcard promotion I called Be Different. A series of 5 different postcards were mailed to 2000 creative directors around the country. In 1997, Apple launched their famous ad campaign called Think Different. Great concept... I always wondered if one of my post cards planted a seed...?

Who else feels sorry for the last banana of the bunch? Often, these lonely fruit's outer appearance ages rapidly from a hopeless sense of neglect, even though their inner soul is still pure sweetness. I tried to help my fruity friend's image, in hopes that someone could indeed enjoy his delicious inner soul of sweetness. But, a banana's life span is brief, and when his sweetness turns soft, it's into the trash can he goes.

Finger Lakes art

Glenn Clark from Clark CSM Marketing Communication called with this very fun job for Bristol Mountain. I was asked to draw a "map" type illustration showing the main roads leading to the ski slope. The target audience was Canada and the states west of NY, so the goal was to show it's a pretty simple drive to the highest ski mt. between Vermont and the Rockies.

Bristol Mountain is located in the middle of the Finger Lakes Region and over the hill from where I live. We live on Honeoye Lake just west of Bristol Mt. Our family grew up skiing at Bristol and our son Charlie now flips waffles at Bristol's Waffle Hut. You'll see my late father-in-law Charlie on his Ford tractor. I like to honor him when I can. He was a WWII Vet and a prime example of The Greatest Generation. He passed away in Dec. '09. He's missed dearly and holds a special part in our hearts.

My good buddy Earl is a big Steeler fan and although most Steeler fans refer to Cleveland as "The Mistake on the Lake" I think Cleveland is better known for the Rockin' Roll Hall of Fame.

The art will be used in brochures, maps, big posters and possibly a billboard. Although it might not show here, I was inspired by Saul Steinberg's famous New Yorker cover showing a close up of NYC while the rest of the world fades off in the distance. I'm currently working on a series of Finger Lake prints and t-shirts where I'll focus on one lake. See samples here: http://www.findharri.com

Canandaigua Lake has been rated one of the most beautiful lakes with the second highest lakefront property values in America. It's located in the heart of NY's wine country. If you're looking for a little getaway, the wine tours are beautiful in the fall, the snow always falls in the winter and if you just like some fun in the sun, stop on by Honeoye Lake and we'll show you a good time!

This is one of the t-shirt designs I sell locally. If you look close, you can see me waving over on the right by the A-frame chalet house.

Victor Adams from MSG Entertaiment called me to see if I'd be interested in drawing NYC, Chicago and Boston featuring the world renown concert venues. When he said they'd be 3 page ads in Billboard Magazine, I said, When can I start? The assignment was to showcase the venues up close and big while showing the city in the background. The NYC image was a challenge to get all 3 concert halls in a related position.

As an avid concert goer and t-shirt peddler in the 70s and 80s, I must say I did have some fond memories and maybe some not so fond memories, but didn't we all back in those crazy days when a concert ticket wasn't an arm and a leg. My first trip to NYC was to sell t-shirts at a David Bowie Concert at The Garden. I was 19 years old when I packed up the ol' Ford Econoline and drove from Pittsburgh, Pa. to the Big Apple, all by myself. I took a wrong tell off the GW and ended up lost in Harlem. I remember people advising me to "Not Get Lost In HARLEM." Well, I lived to sell my shirts and little did I know, I'd be returning to live in NYC and attend Parsons School of Design . And, this time I didn't get lost on a return t-shirt trip to The Garden for The No Nukes Concerts in the late 70s. Now that's a story for another day.

In 1977, I packed the Econoline again and followed the Stones tour from Buffalo to Cleveland to Chicago. The Stones were Hot and my best buddy brought this cute blonde with him to help us sell shirts in Buffalo. Little did I know then, but I ended up marrying her. Thanks Earl, for introducing me to Dawn, my sweet wife...you always had good taste... :^)

The Stones played at Soldiers Field in Chicago on that '77 tour. Great show but I wish it would have been Wrigley Field. It still irks me that I haven't made it inside Wrigley Field. Did anyone make it to Comiskey Park for the Anti Disco game? It was sometime around the mid 70s and what a riot that must of been. Excuse the pun.

I never made it to the Wang Theatre but I've heard it's a more sophistcated crowd. Is that Ernest Hemmingway?

Getting a ticket for the show was sometimes difficult depending on how HOT the band was. And counterfeit tickets were an issue. Back in the 70s there was no "StubHub or eBay to buy "legit" tickets. Is that a whitecollar scalper ripping-off an innocent Bostonian?

Sometimes if a show was sold out, it was fun to just "hang" outside the concert hall hoping maybe a magic door would open or tickets would fall from the sky.

And then there were the times when that magical ticket appeared but you weren't sure if it was a "real" ticket or if that grumpy business man was really an undercover cop getting ready to bust you for a scalping transaction.

And if all else failed and you couldn't get a ticket to that night's concert, well, you could always afford a NYC hotdog.

But even after munching on a delicious hot dog or NYC slice of pizza, getting home was another story.... oh yes, what a long strange trip those concert days were. :^)
