My Friend Vladamir

JANUARY 27, 2009
by Vladamir Bachinsky
I first met Vladamir 13-14 years ago when I first got a place up in Woodstock. He lives nearby in Saugerties.
At the time he had a huge studio nearby that had once been a church. He'd built counter weights and would paint these massive oil paintings and be able to lift them out of the way with one hand. Like our fellow drawger Mr. Hunt, Vladamir is not shy of oils and can paint a masterpiece in minutes ( though he's way too modest to admit it).  Back then he was into painting sexy nude women wearing gas masks. When I first visited his home I was completely blown away at all the artwork and fabulous things he'd created. There are paintings 20' wide by 9' tall sitting outside in all kinds of weather. The last time we spoke around the holidays he was thinking of going back and finishing one of them after it had sat out ten years, it was now ready. His artwork can be seen in everything he touches... from building a giant garden fence with old gnarled trees - to playing Herr Drosselmeyer in the Nutcracker on stage.
Born in the Ukraine he was Classically trained, got his BFA at pratt, NYU, National Acadamy of Design, and Bell' Arte in Rome.
He's painted saints in churches, including the one across from McSorley's on 7th St., directed films and scenic designs for ballet and theater and much more.
I recently took some...( a fraction ) of his work and put it online for him. I'd like to put up more...  Check it out, let me know what you think..
