This is my Illustration for SooJin @ Plan Sponsor Magazine. I had two stories
to pick from (small items) One was for trying to be a custodian of a minor dependent
/ recipient of an IRA. The employee seemed to miss the idea that they would not
be around to be the custodian if the minor did receive their IRA. This image follows
up on the look I did for my letterpress art for the Cranky Pressman. Here I added
texture to mimic the effect of the letterpress printing process.

Cranky Pressman Promotion

I just recieved printed samples for a promotion I did for the letterpress printer Cranky Pressman, based in Ohio. It's the first time I ever had something printed in letterpress. My old art school pal Jamie Berger and I came up with idea for this image as part of the general theme: "It's a cranky world". Jamie had some images of old letterpress presses he wanted to use and I came up with the idea of the Cranky Pressman at home in his garden, perhaps not so cranky after all. Preparing the art was a bit different than traditional cmyk digital art. Basically it's a three color process and attention had to be made to which color would be impressed into the stock. Jamie suggested the printing techinque for the mottled look of the solid color.

Edel Rodriquez had his third annual pool party on Sunday, set to mesh up with the end of ICON5 for those with any life left in them after all the
get-togethers of the week. Due to a late night the night before and limited trains to Edel's house we ended up taking a Limo to Edels house. The only one available was already booked by a well know rock star and his girlfriend. I think his name was Lars or something and he was from Sweden. Our Driver was a nice Indian fellow named Gary.
We even split some champaign with him in the limo with Lars and his gal Udda. Edels party was rocking, rocking from a loud rock band next door having their own party. Seems Lars was headed there.

Quest for the Wacksman's Passage.

For Eons man has sought the elusive Williamsburg passage to the fabled House of Wax, only to be denied. Sure, safe passage could be made through known trading routes like the Brooklyn Bridge, but it was long and tedious. A quicker route to the land of Wax was needed.
Today I found it. After years of promises to visit The House of Wax, today the dream became a reality. My stead, my bike. A foto essay of the journey.

Piggybacking on A.Richard Allens Post on his visit with this sketch of A.R.A. at the Thailand Cafe. Goldin and I Iooked over at A.R.A. and saw him break into a cold sweat, we thought maybe he was not used to the spicy Thai food, but I think it was his cold and jet lag. He was a trooper. Nice to meet Mr. Hunt as well, I have photos and will use them if need be.

There is an amazing exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum. An artist from China named Cai Guo-Qiang. I saw an exhibit of his work in Minneapolis a few years ago. His installations are huge and amazing. This work shown here is called head-on and contains 99 lifesize "replicas" of wolves.

Just did this Op Ed piece for Sunday's LA times about Sloopholes in the tax code which allows luxury items like yachts not to be taxed. A fight has broken out over this tax even though it would not begin to be enough revenue to cover all of California's Tax woes. The story states that Californians can't decide if they want to be Sweden or Mississippi. (high benefits vs low taxes)

Two opening in Downtown New York Last night, just a stones throw away from each other. The mega event Stefan Sagmeister @ Deitch Projects was mobbed. I never made inside it was so packed. Apparently Sagmeister kidnapped Massimo who was trying to get help by writing a message of some sort on the window. I think he was later released unharmed.

When Brodner asked me to contribute by to the Show Artists Against the War, I thought I’d have an easy time coming up with an appropriate image. Instead I found the process a bit daunting. It’s such an open-ended subject. On one hand I did not want to come off being flip and on the other I did not want to create something knee-jerk either. I had to find the right balance of flippy-knee-jerky-ness-smug-profoundousity.

Thinking about this war and what it meant to me was an interesting process. I came to the realization that I did not think much about the war and that was part of the problem. I thought I should refresh my memory on how we got into this mess.

9-11: blame Osama Bin Laden and bomb Afghanistan to dust.
check. Made some sense. Missed the Osama part though.

Sadam has WMD’s and harbors al qaeda..
Got Sadam, No WMD’s … no real al qaeda, until later…

What happened to home field advantage?

I don’t think too many people think about this war on a daily basis. I would walk the streets of New York and see young people buying I-pods and sneakers without a care in the world. Clearly this is not the WW2 war effort at home. I see no victory garden’s, No posters saying “loose lips sink ships.” No conversion of factories to the war effort. No rationing. The biggest thing of all:
No Draft. Guess that would be a deal ender.

I suppose some would argue, we fight the war so we can buy I-pods and walk around wasting oil, that's the American way. yeah, ok...

I called my piece: “The struggle at home”

Vote. There has to be a better way to do things.

Persepolis the Movie

I saw the animated movie Persepolis last night. I first heard about this via Isabelle Dervaux when she mentioned trying to get the artist as part of ICON5. (not sure that went through) Written and drawn by Marjane Satrapi, I highly recommend this movie. Mostly in black and white, it's a story told in the first person by a young girl growing up in Iran. We go from repressive rule by the Shah to even more repressive rule by a religious government . In between an escape to study abroad in Vienna adds distance and humor to the story. The animation is top notch and the story is both funny, educational and touching.

Swoon exhibit on Maui

Earlier this year while on Maui I was surprised to see that the street artist Swoon was doing a residency at the arts center Hui No’eau for a month, working with Maui youth. Swoon who’s real name is somewhat secret or was…(she used to hide it to avoid prosecution for pasting her works on private buildings) works in paper prints with elaborate cut outs which are glued in public places. Swoon was extremely energetic
and positive artist in person.

Exhibit at Dietch Projects

Paul Mullowney is the director of print making and runs Hui Press. This excerpt from the Hui site: “As part of a newly created Artist in Residence Program, HuiPress was launched in 2004, taking fine art printmaking on Maui to a new level. Nationally & internationally recognized mid career and emerging artists are invited to work with Master Printers and University Interns in an environment designed to support creative expression in printmaking. Our aim is to foster experimentation, innovation, and collaboration, while pushing the boundaries of traditional print media.”

Illustrator and artist Marcos Chin was on Island for some R and R so he, his friend Mikey, Ellen Weinstein and I wandered over to the art opening. The exhibit was a collaboration of work done by students and actual Swoon artwork. It was a bit hard to tell which is which in some of the photos. It was a great night and the place was packed with lots of youth who enjoyed the spotlight.

These were for an overnighter for an op-ed piece about Home Depot's expansion (and big box) plans and how community boards are having more of a say on these stores opening or not in their areas. Home Depot actually pays people to wear orange t-shirts and to pack meetings to sway opinions.

General precautions when in a public cafe:

What are some good practices in a cafe?
Here are some good tips:
- Don't leave the computer unattended with your information on the screen. Logout of all programs.
- Logout of any websites you have visited by clicking on 'Logout' versus closing the browser window.
- When you are finished, delete your temporary Internet files and your history.
In Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, then click on the General tab. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files and then Delete Cookies. Under History, click Clear History.
- Also, empty the Recycle or Rubbish Bin.
- As an added precaution go to
the Content tab and click on Autocomplete in the Personal Information area. Ensure that all the options are un-ticked and choose Clear Forms and Clear Passwords.
- Keep an eye out for shoulder surfers or people using video enabled mobile phones.
- Download a free (reputable) anti-spyware software and ensure it is updated, before scanning the computer to ensure there are no bits of malicious software or traps for the unwary.

CS3 Photoshop, features review and complaints

I recently upgraded to the new CS3 Photoshop and I have to
say I’m not too happy with many of the changes from PSD 7
(CS). Mostly I have complaints about the layers menu design.
Here are my main gripes, if you know a way to make these
features work, please let me know.

A. Linking layers together. For some odd reason, Adobe threw
out the easy to use “link” icon that was in each layer and replaced it
with a hard to use “link” icon that only exists in bottom of the layers
pallet. Why lord why?

B. Layer sets and image selection. Layers sets are a great way to
organize your complex images. All the layers for mr. A can be put into
a layer set folder, All the layers for Mrs. B. can be in another folder.
When working on an image one simply had to option click on an image
area and you would be transported to that layer instantly even if it was
in a layer set. CS3 seems to only take you to the layer set itself now
unless one does an awkward command, control and option click.
Ok, maybe it’s good to just get to a layer set, but I would have liked
that the lesser used command would be the one that took you there and
the more often used command of option click took one to the exact layer.

Flaherty review: “Bad move”

C. Another annoying thing about CS3 is if one has an overall color layer
that is transparent and sits on top of all other layers, CS3 will only take you
to the overlay, transparent layer. One is forced to turn this layer off in order
to edit the main image in any effective fast manner.

D. My final complaint in the layers pallet involves the locking of layers again.
When I tried to lock two separate layers at various ends of the layer pallet,
(one was say, layer 2 and one was deeper down layer 33, I could find no way
to do this in CS3. There is often times when one needs this feature and I cannot
figure why Adobe has “seemingly” dumped this on CS3 PSD.

Flaherty review: “Real bad move”

Let me say that this is only an initial reaction to the new CS3, but as artists we need to
install new software and start running with it. Having features we are accustomed to
and know, change or disappear altogether is a real drag. I can say the new File browser
looks pretty.

If you know anything about these features or how to make them work, be sure to let
me know and I’ll add the info and stand corrected.

Here's a picture of the fawn in the yard. I learned they have no smell when young so the mother finds it safer to leave the fawn by itself for hours sometimes even days. The ranger says the mother "tells" it to stay. So it was out there for at least 7 hours, I saw it stand up once to stretch. When night fell it was gone.

Swim For the River Documentary

This Documentary is on TV today (NYC area) at 4pm. The website
lists other viewing times in other areas.

Chris Swain braved whitewater, sewage, snapping turtles, hydroelectric dams, homeland security patrols, factory outfalls, and PCB contamination to become the first person to swim the entire length of the Hudson River from the Adirondack Mountains to New York City. In the film, Swain’s experience links together stories of the river, which begins in wilderness and ends in one of the nation’s densest population centers. We meet heroes who are fighting to protect the Hudson against a range of threats from industry, inept regulatory agencies, and public indifference.

In the film the epic of the 19th century destruction and redemption of the Adirondacks compliments the modern-day story of citizens fighting to block the building of a huge trash plant that would burn one quarter of New York City’s garbage. Meanwhile the environmental group Riverkeeper battles the ExxonMobil Corporation to force it to clean up the largest oil spill in the United States and we get the latest in the three-decade old fight to make General Electric take responsibility for its PCB contamination.

We meet famous people, like folk singer Pete Seeger, but we also see how ordinary citizens can and do make a difference through choices they make effecting the environment, and by joining together around a common cause. SWIM FOR THE RIVER is a hopeful film that avoids preaching to the choir. Swain’s lighthearted commentary and incredible physical achievement appeal to a wide audience.

I just did this illustration for the LA Times. It’s a fun story about a guy renting a sleazy office in Hollywood. You can read the story here. Featured in the story is Roscoe’s house
of Chicken N Waffles, a landmark I guess of LA. I feel this is somehow related to Steve
Waxman’s post about chicken getting thrown at him. Anyway it was an over-nighter and
I enjoyed the subject matter for this story. My sketches were loose even by my standards.

A select group of Drawgers assembled last night to meet and greet our Drawger representative from across the pond Linzie Hunter, here on a secret mission | Holiday. New Pasteur Vietnamese Restaurant would be the place to meet as Thomas Keller's Per Se was booked solid for the night. A $25 per price was thrust upon even the late-comers who dined on left overs. Linzie broke out a grab bag of gifts later on containing noxious candies and teas from some foreign country. A good time was had by all. Some photos by David Gothard.

Jan. 6th: Woodstock NY. John Cuneo 50th Birthday party. John was surprised by perhaps 50- 100 of his close friends who flew in from California and Denver to be there. It's a special thing to have that many people respect you to that degree. John was presented with a special "sketchbook" (rated M for mature) made by 20 top illustrators as a gift. Thats to Tim Bower and his wife Kim for organizing that. Thanks to John's wife Jan for getting the party together and keeping John happy.

Overnight job for Time Magazine

The call came in about 11am on Tuesday morning from Time Magazine's AD D.W. Pine....
"Hi Dave, Edel Rodriquez gave me your name and thought you might be right for this project."
Can you do it? The Deadline is tomorrow about 2pm. I need 31 emoticons icons for a story
about New Emoticons for 2007. Emoticons are little icons that are included in msn mail and
other e.mail applications. "Uh, sure I said! " Long story short, got my sketches done, approved
with some small adjustments, "need an older Saddam, bigger hair on Kim Jong Il"....

Anyway, I had the finals into D.W. early the next morning. No changes at all required by Time.
Dream scenario! Thanks Edel, Thanks D.W.! I've included some of the clever writing that makes

Product recalls: Target: Che CD's Guevara off Target shelves Che Guevara CD case pulled from shelves (Reuters) Updated: 2006-12-23 18:24 Target Corp said on Friday it had pulled a CD carrying case bearing Ernesto "Che" Guevara's image after an outcry by critics who label the Marxist revolutionary a murderer and totalitarian symbol. Target had touted a music disc carrying case for Che admirers emblazoned with the Argentine-born guerrilla's iconic 1960 portrait by Alberto Diaz, or "Korda." A set of small earphones was superimposed on the image, suggesting he was tuned in to an iPod or other music player. "It is never our intent to offend any of our guests through the merchandise we carry," Target said in a statement. "We have made the decision to remove this item from our shelves and we sincerely apologize for any discomfort this situation may have caused our guests." Some business columnists had decried the product, sold under Target's brand, saying the trendy discount chain was giving in to a misguided fashion craze while ignoring Guevara's role in bringing Fidel Castro's Communist rule to Cuba. "What next? Hitler backpacks? Pol Pot cookware? Pinochet pantyhose?" wrote Investor's Business Daily in an editorial earlier this month, citing the Guevara case as a model of "tyrant-chic." Wall Street Journal columnist Mary Anastasia O'Grady said Target made an "admirable decision" to correct the actions of some company employees who "allowed Target to become a target itself of the Che myth." In a rare moment of accord, some social activists said they were not sorry to see Guevara taken off Target's shelves, but on different grounds. "Che would just be rolling in his grave if he knew his face was making money for Target," said Nell Greenberg, spokeswoman for San Francisco-based Global Exchange. "Everyone who does support that legacy of social justice is certainly not going to be opposed to stopping Target from using that tool." Guevara's image is literally stamped into the capitalist consumer society that he died fighting to overturn. His portrait adorns everything from schoolbags to T-shirts and women's lingerie. The picture of a stern-faced Guevara sporting a beret with a single star was popularized on posters after his 1967 execution in Bolivia, where he tried to foment a Communist uprising. Its place as a symbol of idealistic revolt has held strong in the decades since, from students rioting in Paris in 1968 to Palestinians launching an uprising against Israel in 2000. For people gift-shopping, Guevara's image is part of a motley of symbols of retro cool that populate flea market stalls and chic designer boutiques. Product Recall: P-Diddy Sean John Jackets with real Dog fur Diddy's Sean John fashions may look pretty but according to the Humane Society of the United States, some of it was being made out of dog fur. The Society revealed on their website that the Sean John Hodded Snorkel Jacket, advertised as having an "imitation rabbit fur collar" and "faux fur" was actually made from real fur from raccoon dogs the HSUS says are "killed inhumanely in China."

Best Shows Ever Redux

I know David Gothard mentioned this already, but if you have not seen these two shows at the Brooklyn Museum you should make haste!
Ron Mueck does scale based figurative sculptures (Leo posted in the past about him) and Walton Ford does amazing huge watercolors of Animal themes. Fantastic! I have to go back and see more of it.

I was finally able to get up to the Whitney and see the Edward Hopper show there. This has to be one of the best shows ever. His drawings are especially amazing to see. One of my favorites was called "Dandy blowing smoke rings" or something like that. Great stuff!
