Mitt Romney

AUGUST 17, 2007
I did this portrait of Mitt Romney for an article on the Iowa caucus.  Although he won the caucus, the article discussed how he sweated through the whole thing, since the pressure was on from some of his rivals.
I thought of this idea right away and thought that any linework or details in the eyes or nose would just distract from the main point.  It looks different from the usual things I do, but that's how I find new directions in my work.  I think "what's the important thing here" and try to focus the illustration.  In the end it looks slightly like something my friend Hanoch would do, or maybe Kroninger.  I don't know, but I enjoyed working on it.  Romney has that classic and rehearsed politician's smile, it seems so fake.
During the process of creating my final illustrations, sometimes my work looks like this about halfway through, before I finish the drawing that goes on top of the color.  Sometimes I look at the abstract image and think I should just stop!
