JULY 25, 2012

Last Friday morning was very rainy, I was in my studio working on some projects with my family so I hadn't watched the news.   I received a message about working on a cover for The Hollywood Reporter about the tragedy in Aurora.  I had no idea what was going on.   I turned on the television and was shocked about what had occurred the previous night.
This is one of the first ideas that came to mind for this cover.   I tried a few poses and versions but this one seemed to work.  I wanted to create something quiet and respectful.
It's a bit complicated to figure out how to combine the sad reality of human tragedy with the fantasy of movies and super heroes.  I think this has been the case with anyone that tries to cover this story, and I did the best I could with it.  My thoughts go out to the families affected by this tragedy.
The issue of The Hollywood Reporter is out now, some of the stories are also online at the THR website.  The cover is printed in full black with silver ink, a detail and drawing process is below.

The black drawing was done with sumi ink on paper. The background and silver glow were done digitally and separated out for printing with metallic ink.
