Orchestra Baobab from Senegal

OCTOBER 28, 2006
It's Saturday night and I just want to put some great World music out there.
You may not have heard of Orchestra Baobab but they're a great band from Senegal.  I did the drawing above for The New Yorker a couple of years ago.  They sent me some of the band's C.D.'s and I got hooked.  I play them all the time while I work now.
Cuban music began with Cubans taking from African rhythms.  The cool thing about these guys from Senegal is that they became obsessed with Cuban music and started making their own Cuban style music.  So, it's all going in circles.  Back and forth exchanges in the arts have always intrigued me.

HERE they are playing live.

HERE is the latest CD they released with samples of some of their songs.

Yes, I'm the official Drawger VJ.  Sue me!  People can't have enough music in their lives.
