Kokeshi Doll LA Exhibition
I added some kaolin clay molding to the figure and while I was carving it between my knees I could not help but think I could be sitting on a beach in the islands somewhere.
Here is some info on this show: The KOKESHI: FROM FOLK ART TO ART TOY , will be presented at the Japanese American National Museum in collaboration with the Los Angeles Toy, Doll and Amusements Museum. The exhibition takes a fresh look at the iconic Japanese folk toy, exploring its origins and history, and contrasts traditional kokeshi with the work of artists who produce contemporary interpretations inspired by -- and paying homage to -- these humble dolls. As an extra special feature, the exhibition will also include a "kokeshi custom show," featuring a lively display of kokeshi customized by over 100 well-known international contemporary artists. These will be offered for sale through the Japanese American National Museum Store. Opens July 11 through Oct 4, 2009
