Weed Beasts

SEPTEMBER 16, 2009
"Picking weeds is like meditation." Never thought that I would say that - I must be getting old. Last week SooJin and I spent about 3 days picking weeds in the Catskills. The rainy weather this summer created a bounty of super weeds. Doing something so monotonous and without having to think was just what I needed to unwind.
SooJin had been discussing the next story for the cover of PLANSPONSOR magazine and luckily for me, many illustrators were on vacation so I took it. The article was about how securities lending has become a fertile field for litigation due to the recent financial market disruptions. Well, I brought a few weeds back to the studio with me for some inspiration and I began the "Weed Beasts" painting.
I begin with a little staining and a lot of finger smudging.
Much of my time is spent on the under-drawing where I play with the lights and darks.
So serious! I think I'll go blind from squinting at my paintings. My palette and poisons are placed near my window with a vent fan. I also have a giant IQair purifier in my studio. I always thought I had asthma until I got this purifier.
