Midsummer Night

Midsummer Night/12"x16"/oil on panel

Even though "midsummer night" isn't officially till August 6th, it really feels like it in NYC today. I was asked by Reader's Digest to illustrate "The Magic of a Midsummer Night” which was originally published in August 1961, and is reprinted this month as part of their Classic series. It's a beautifully written story that tempts the viewer to go outside during midsummer night and listen, concentrate on singular sound from nature and track it down. (After about 45 minutes of adjustment, the human eye can see almost as well as an owl's and a lot better than a rabbit's) -says the author Jean Craighead George who I just found out passed away this year. She was a naturalist and wrote over one hundred books mainly for young adults and won numerous awards including the Newberry Medal. I'm very glad that Reader's Digest matched me up with this author and article.
