MONKEYS ON A PLANE
I’ve been working with Custo since 2005, contributing to their last 8 seasons collections and I love it. Since
I first saw the way my work was applied to apparel for their spring/summer 2006 collection i have continued to
be surprised by the techniques they use. From design through to production they are contsantly experimenting
with new materials and printing possibilities. Garments are often embelished with studs or sequins, embroidered,
bleached, tie dyed. Where my creative process ends is the beginning of the creative process for the
designer who then applies my work to the garments. To witness the seemingly endless possibilites of applying my work to fashion has been a real
education, helping me to visualize the creative potential of my work in a way i was unable to do before.
Being asked to design the artwork for the Vueling/MTV collabroation was a treat. The surface
area constraints were a challenge to work with at first as apart from the odd shape of the fusilage there were
also a lot of dead areas such as the windows, security exits, numbers etc. to work around.
I wanted a theme for the piece and decided on ‘Spread Love’. - my way of expressing a sentiment i try to abide by
to a wider audience. I wanted the image to have a sense of innocence, purity, and beauty as well to help
underline that the message was genuinely felt. So, in came the girl, the paradise island, and her two playful
castway sailor monkey companions The design carries through to the interior of the plane with 3 headrest
designs and onboard menu.
The plane is an airbus A320 and will be in service through summer 2009 flying
over Europe. Spreading that love.
